It was a bright cold day in April…
Like so many good ideas, ours started one Saturday morning in April after parkrun in our kitchen, surrounded by the hum of our nutri-bullet blender.
As a active family that loves the outdoors, fresh organic produce, and a nutrient-packed morning smoothie, we already had a daily ritual. Get out a handful of ice, a handful of blueberries, break up a banana, some iced water, a scoop of protein powder, some psyllium husk, chopped ginger, some flaxseeds, coconut oil, and a dollop of Greek yoghurt – and then screw on the lid and set the nutri-bullet to do it’s job.
And then we’d relive the events of parkrun – maybe one of us set a new pb, or we had slogged it out through the rain…
But each Saturday morning, we all ran into the exact same roadblock: the straw.
We had completely banned single-use plastics from our home, we are very conscious of plastics – but we had tried to use paper straws, bamboo straws, even silicone straws – but the eco-friendly alternatives just weren’t cutting it.
The paper ones turned to soggy mush before we were halfway through our thick protein shake. The standard metal straws we had floating around the house gave everything a harsh, tinny, copper-like aftertaste that ruined the flavour of fresh ingredients—not to mention the constant fear of not quite knowing what was inside the curved part of the straw.
And at the end of the day, it just wasn’t fun to suck on a decent smoothie with such a tiny, thin straw.
We looked at each other and said, “There has to be a better way to drink a thick smoothie without compromising on taste, safety, or the planet.”
From the Kitchen Benchtop to a Mission.
We didn’t set out to build an e-commerce brand; we just wanted a functional, premium product that actually worked for real life. When we couldn’t find a reusable straw that was wide enough for thick blends, completely flavour-neutral, and gentle on the mouth, we decided to source and design our own. Flash forward a few months and we were on our way.
What started as a personal quest to fix our morning routine quickly grew into smoothiestraws.com.au. We realized our friends, neighbours, and local community runners were experiencing the exact same frustrations.
They wanted to do the right thing by the environment, but they were tired of “eco-anxiety” and poorly designed alternatives that made healthy living a chore. Plus the exiting metal straws were tinny, thin and almost disposable in their flimsiness.
We believe sustainability shouldn’t require a radical, complicated lifestyle shift. True change happens through simple, high-quality, everyday product swaps that fit naturally into your existing routine. Making a small shift in the right direction can be quite significant in the long term when you adopt the “steering a freight liner” analogy.
